Five years ago today, Robby asked me to marry him! I had just graduated from JMU on May 9th, and my family (Robby included) went down to Florida for our annual Disney vacation. It was also a way to celebrate, and introduce Robby to what I love so much about Disney World!
We had been dating for seven and a half years at that point, so of course I gave him plenty of hints that it would be the perfect opportunity to ask if he was ever going to! We had already been talking about marriage for a long time, but wanted to wait until we had a home and were both done with school and had money to throw such a celebration! Robby and I have the type of relationship where we both can’t keep surprises from each other, so I thought there was no way he would buy me a ring and keep a proposal a secret! I figured we’d be the couple that goes to the jewelry store and picks the ring out together. He had even dropped hints saying ‘I wish I could get you a ring babe, but I just can’t afford it’. But, to my amazement, he had gone out and purchased a ring and carried it all the way to Disney with him without me having any clue! It was near the end of the trip, and I thought that any dream or hope of a Disney proposal was just a silly dream and that I’d have to wait for whatever type of proposal was right for him. We all headed to the castle for some ‘pictures’, and my mom said ‘okay, now it’s you and Robby – stand in front of the castle!’. I seriously had NO IDEA.
Robby grabbed my hands, looked me in the eyes, said a whole bunch of really sweet things (that I can’t remember, but included how much he loved me, etc.) and then got down on one knee. I was just completely in shock! I was so in shock, I thought I was going to pass out!
It was so sweet that he chose to propose to me where I have spent many years of priceless memories with my family – it’s not just a fairy tale place for me, but a place where I enjoyed so many happy and relaxing memories with my family growing up. I’m also glad I converted him to a Disney lover – as we now have started our own family tradition of vacationing there! We ended up getting married in Disney World two years later – blog post, here – and found out we were expecting our first child while on vacation there, on our anniversary! So, Disney now has a very special place in our hearts! Do they have an L&D ward??
Wherever your proposal took place, I think it then becomes a special place that you want to revisit, or a memory you want to hold onto! I love it when the guy chooses a location that has a special meaning to the bride-to-be! The location of the first date, location of a first kiss, etc!
Enjoy some more cheesy pictures of our engagement week! haha :D
Normally the castle is full of people – but for some reason, it was empty for Robby’s big moment ;-) …My sister videotaping the action! I HAD to get the obligatory Minnie Bride ears and show off my excitement to the world! pic on the left: two of my three sisters (Tabitha and Fiona), pic on the right: Robby and I at the Polynesian, where we ended up staying for our wedding week and Disneymoon
